Can You Still Get Pregnant in Perimenopause? (yes, here’s why)
1 min read

Think your baby-making days are over just because your periods are acting up? Not quite. One of the most common myths I see as a nurse is the belief that erratic periods = no more ovulation.
But here’s the truth: you can still get pregnant during perimenopause and plenty of women do.
Let’s break it down.
Perimenopause Isn’t Menopause
Menopause means 12 months without a period. Perimenopause is the transition toward menopause and it can last years. During that time, ovulation might be irregular… but it’s still happening.
Your Cycle Is Unpredictable Not Gone
You might skip a few months, then suddenly ovulate again. Hormones like oestrogen and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) fluctuate wildly in your 40s, which can trigger unexpected ovulation and fertile windows.
Real Talk: I’ve Seen Pregnancies at 43, 45, Even 47
These weren’t planned and they weren’t impossible. Fertility decreases, but it doesn’t disappear. If you’re not using contraception and you’re still ovulating, pregnancy is still on the table.
What You Can Do:
Don’t rely on irregular periods as birth control
Ask about non-hormonal and hormonal contraceptive options
Learn to track ovulation signs (like cervical mucus changes)
Talk to a trusted provider about your goals and risks
💛 Nurse Tip:
Your body might be changing but that doesn’t mean it’s shutting down. Understanding what’s possible empowers you to make informed choices, not accidental ones.
