5 Signs Your Hormones Might Be Off (and what to do about it)
1 min read

Ever feel “off” but can’t quite explain why? You’re not alone. As a women’s health nurse, I see so many women in their 30s and 40s dealing with weird shifts but assuming it’s just stress, aging, or being a mum. The truth? Your hormones may be quietly out of balance.
Here are 5 signs your body might be waving the hormone flag and how to gently respond.
1. You’re tired, no matter how much you sleep
This isn’t just “busy life tired.” It’s deep, unshakable fatigue that doesn't lift with rest. Hormones like progesterone, cortisol, and thyroid function can all play a role.
2. Mood swings or sudden irritability
One moment you’re fine, the next you're spiralling even when nothing’s “wrong.” That emotional rollercoaster could be oestrogen or serotonin sensitivity linked to cycle shifts or perimenopause.
3. Your period has changed
Heavier? Lighter? Skipped altogether? Changes in flow or timing can signal shifts in oestrogen, progesterone, or ovulation patterns.
4. Dry skin, dry eyes… or dryness down there
Hormones keep your body’s tissues hydrated. If things feel dry and uncomfortable especially in intimate areas it could be a sign of low oestrogen.
5. You don’t feel like yourself anymore
This is one of the most common things I hear. It’s hard to describe you’re functioning, but something’s “off.” Trust that feeling. Hormones affect everything from energy to memory to confidence.
What to Do Next:
Track your symptoms across your cycle
Ask your GP about blood tests (thyroid, iron, B12, etc.)
Prioritise sleep, hydration, and protein-rich meals
Consider working with a women’s health practitioner or hormone specialist
💛 Nurse Tip:
You don’t have to accept imbalance as your new normal. Your body is speaking it deserves to be heard.
